Bergmannstraße, Berlin

Bergmannstraße is located in the hip and lively district of Kreuzberg, and is one of the most vibrant streets in the entire city of Berlin. On the weekends, countless by-passers and residents enjoy the range of products at the busy Markthalle, browse through the thrift stores and fashion boutiques and enjoy all kinds of cuisines from the restaurants and cafés.

The transformation of the street came as a result of a dialogue between the district of Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg and the citizens on how the future of Bergmannstraße should look like. 15 parklets from Vestre were hereby placed in the street during an evaluation period of one year, to slow down traffic in the area by replacing parking spaces with city life.
The one-year period came to an end in October 2019, and the parklets are now being considered for another location in Berlin.

Together with Vestre, Studio Oslo Landskapsarkitekter (SOLA) has developed a robust, modular Parklets system that can be combined and adapted to suit urban needs. Parklets 2.0 are an important contribution to «Bilfritt Byliv», Oslo’s car-free city life project, in which cars are being phased out of the city center by 2020.
