Six reasons why manufacturers should start using SSAB’s fossil-free steel
Vestre’s goal behind its use of SSAB’s fossil-free steel is to inspire more companies to follow suit. We are doing this by creating a popular and social example of what the steel can be used for, i.e. the world’s first bench made from fossil-free steel. There isn’t much that is more solid and accessible to people than a park bench in the public space. It’s a place where people can sit down and talk and get to know each other.

“When we first heard about the HYBRIT process and SSAB's fossil-free steel, we immediately realized that this could be a major part of the solution for a net zero society. We immediately contacted SSAB to place an order,” said Øyvind Bjørnstad, Sustainability Manager at Vestre.
Early estimates show that converting all of the steel that Vestre uses to fossil-free steel could reduce our total carbon footprint by around 60 per cent. We want to be a driving force behind the demand for the fossil-free alternative, and when the prices of the EU's mandatory carbon dioxide quotas rise, there will be even more pressure on the steel industry to reduce carbon dioxide emissions too.

”It is fantastic to start this sustainability journey with Vestre since they share our goal of reducing the carbon footprint throughout the value chain. At the same time, the collaboration also shows the wide range of applications for our fossil-free steel” says Thomas Hörnfeldt, Vice President of Sustainable Business at SSAB.
