The Plus in Magnor, Norway
The Plus—the world’s most environmentally friendly furniture factory—opened in Magnor, Norway, in 2022. Spanning 7,000 square metres, this facility has become a symbol of sustainable innovation and plays a pivotal role in fostering community development, currently employing 40 individuals with the capacity for 70.
Designed by the esteemed Bjarke Ingels Group, The Plus is conceived as the direct translation of logistics into architecture. The four production areas—the Color factory, Wood factory, Assembly, and Warehouse—are arrayed around a central courtyard that forms the very heart of the building.
The Plus, the world's first factory to earn the highest BREEAM rating, "Outstanding," reduces energy consumption by 60% and greenhouse gas emissions by 55% compared to conventional factories. Its 900 solar panels generate about 250,000 kWh of renewable energy annually.
But The Plus is more than just a production site; it's a community hub that invites exploration and learning. Embodying the Norwegian "right to roam" principle, it offers public access to its green roof and recreational areas, promoting sustainable living.
